o   Parents of 9^th, 10^th and 11^th graders - Plan to attend the “College Credit Now” Summit on Thursday, March 12^th from 6:00 to 8:00 pm at Campbell High School.  Meet college representatives from Georgia State University, Georgia Highlands, Georgia Perimeter and Chattahoochee Technical College as well as representatives from the DOE.  LEARN ABOUT 100% PAID TUITION AND EARNING COLLEGE CREDIT WHILE IN HIGH SCHOOL.

GREAT NEWS!!!!!!

 

Our mighty falcons made it to round 3! We will face Norcross High School on Wednesday, February 25, 2015 at 8:00 PM. The game will be at Norcross. The address is 5300 Spalding Dr, Norcross, GA 30092. We will have a spirit bus that is funded by PHS Athletics. Students must pay for their game ticket in advance so that we will not have any confusion at the gate. Tickets may be purchased in the main office before school and during lunch in the cafeteria. Permission Forms are available in the Main Office and should be picked up between classes. No students may travel without this form. First Christian Church of Mableton has offered to allow our travelling students to eat at the church at 5 PM. The bus will depart at 5:30 PM from the bus port and is expected to return at approximately 10:30 PM.

· Game Admission – The cost for admission is $10.00 for anyone who enters the game. This is a double header game that features Norcross vs Westlake Girls before our game.

· Passes / Complimentary Admission – GHSA Passes, GAOA Passes, and College Coaching Identification are the only passes that will be honored at the gate per GHSA regulations. These guidelines are set by the GHSA and are not local rules.

· Decorum – The highest levels of sportsmanship are expected from all fans representing the Pebblebrook Falcons and Cobb County School District. Our administration and Campus Police are responsible for removing any spectators who do not meet these expectations. All items listed in the GHSA Sportsmanship Statement apply to this event. I would like to highlight a few that were indicated in our instruction packet.

o Peps bands and artificial noisemakers are not permitted in the arena.

o Banners and signs are not permitted in the arena.

o Spectators must wear shirts and shoes at all times in the arena.

o Spectators are not allowed on the game floor at any time.

o Game management, security personnel, and game officials have the right to demand that spectators be removed from the arena for unacceptable behavior.

· Seating – We will abide by their gymnasium seating charts and use the sections designated for visiting teams’ student sections.

Please secure your copy of Romeo & Juliet: No Fear Shakespeare no later than Friday, February 20th. this book can be purchased for $5.00 at The Book House on Veterans Memorial or checked out from a public library. It is also available for free online. You may use an electronic device to read the text at home.

Week of February 9-13

E.Q's.---How do I prepare NOW for the EOC? Why is it important to know & understand the elements of fictional and non-fictional texts? How does irony impact the overall meaning of a text?


Monday---GUIDANCE LESSONS ALL CLASSES


Tuesday--- All classes will continue to analyze film verson of Roald Dahl's  Matilda for the three types of irony. Students will use information to write about the author's purpose for the use of irony.


Wednesday---Nonfiction Text Analysis: Students will be read assigned articles in collaborative groups. Students will complete graphic organzer and a visual that summarizes main points of the article. Groups will present findings to the class.


Thursday---Same as above


Friday---Field Trip to see Selma for select students.

Complete all  USA Test Prep assignments for the week of 2/9/15  by FRIDAY @ 12:00 a.m.

Secure a copy of No Fear Shakespeare:Romeo & Juliet  no later than 2/16/15

Do You Plan to Attend Tutoring???
ATTENTION STUDENTS...tutoring shuttles will resume on Monday February 2, 2015 at 5:00 PM. The buses will run on Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday only. The Wednesday shuttle is reserved only for students enrolled in the NovaNet program. Students must report to their teacher by 3:40 and must remain with that teacher until 5:00 PM in order to receive a bus pass. If students are tardy to tutorial, they will not be admitted and will not receive a bus pass. They will be responsible for their own transportation. 


In 9th Lit this week...

PTSA OPEN HOUSE  @ 6:30 pm January 29, 2015. Please come out and bring your parents!!!

If you are selected to attend the very special field trip to AMC Phipps Plaza to see Selma on February 13, 2015, please return your permission slip and $10.00 as soon as possible. Students will need to bring extra money for lunch.

Unit 1: Is Conflict Necessary?

This unit, the first of four, uses the short story as the vehicle for reviewing common literary elements, as well as for appreciating the art of great storytelling. This unit enables students to confirm and hone a common understanding of important literary elements, as well as a shared vocabulary for discussing them. Each story may be used to focus especially on a particular element, such as point of view or symbolism. 

Essential Questions:

• Why do we tell stories?
• Why is it important to know and understand the elements of fictional text?
• How do literary elements (i.e., flashback, plot, symbol, suspense, characterization, irony, setting, tone/mood, theme, imagery, point-of-view) play a part in the essence and workings of a short story.

Standards:

• RL.9-10.1: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text.
• RL.9-10.5: Analyze how an author’s choices concerning how to structure a text, order events within it (e.g., parallel plots), and manipulate time (e.g., pacing, flashbacks) create such effects as mystery, tension, or surprise.
• W.9-10.2: Write informative/explanatory texts to examine and convey complex ideas, concepts, and information clearly and accurately through the effective selection, organization, and analysis of content.
• SL.9-10.1: Initiate and participate effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grades 9–10 topics, texts, and issues, building on others’ ideas and expressing their own clearly and persuasively.

Tutoring is available DAILY from 7:50 a.m. to 8:10 a.m. in room 901. I will also offer tutoring after school on Tuesday and Thursdays by appointment.
